Drafts and history

Every save creates or replaces a version of the page. A version is a full snapshot of all the page's saved slot values and its SEO settings, so any point in time can be viewed or restored as it was.

Saving

In edit mode, the editor changes slots and then chooses:

  • Save as draft: keeps the changes unpublished. Visitors still see the published version.
  • Save and publish: makes the changes live.
  • Schedule...: makes the changes live at a set date and time. See Schedule publishing.

A page has at most one draft. Saving a draft again replaces it. Slots the editor did not change are carried forward from the draft, or else from the live version. A waiting schedule is never changed by editing.

Publishing and version numbers

Publishing or scheduling freezes the draft as the next numbered version. A draft has no number until then. Versions are numbered 1, 2, 3 in order. A cancelled schedule keeps its number, so it shows as a gap among the versions that went live.

What visitors see is the live version: the one that went live most recently, counting a scheduled version from its release time.

History and rollback

The History button on the toolbar opens a rail listing the page's versions. It is there while viewing a page, not in edit mode. The editor can preview any version and publish it.

Publishing an older version does not go back in time. It adds a new published version with that version's content, and records which version it was copied from. Any draft is left as it is.

History only grows. No published version is ever changed or removed. Cancelling a schedule marks the version cancelled and keeps it.

Note

Saving drafts, publishing, and previewing and restoring versions from the History rail all work today; see Edit a page.
